Same-day sales compress weeks of negotiation into a single appointment. That only works when both sides bring complete paperwork, agree payment mechanics in advance, and understand there is no cooling-off period once private sale funds are irreversible. Use this checklist the night before: it covers identity, finance, vehicle condition disclosure, data privacy, and post-sale notifications so you leave with money and peace of mind.

If you are selling to a licensed car buyer with a fixed site, many steps below are handled in-house; still verify fees and timelines in writing. If you are selling privately, discipline matters even more because there is no complaints desk.

Night before: documents folder

  • V5C, MOT history printout, service book or invoices
  • Settlement letter if financed, plus lender phone number
  • Passport or driving licence and proof of address
  • Spare keys, locking wheel nut, charging cables
  • Bank sort code and account details printed for incoming transfer

Morning of: vehicle and personal security

Remove garage door openers, house keys on keyrings, and clear saved addresses from sat-nav. Factory-reset infotainment only if you know how without bricking the unit — some systems need dealer intervention; at minimum delete Bluetooth pairings and mobile contacts. Photograph fuel level and mileage at arrival for disputes. Walk around with the buyer documenting agreed condition before test drive or ramp inspection.

Payment: what "cleared" means

CHAPS and Faster Payments bank transfers are standard. Cash carries counterfeit risk and counting errors. Cheques are obsolete for same-day. Never hand keys until you have confirmation from your banking app or in-branch staff that the credit is irreversible — not merely "sent" from the buyer's app with a pending status. For high values, completing inside a bank branch is old-fashioned but still effective.

At signature: DVLA and receipt

Complete keeper transfer online immediately after payment clears. Give the buyer the green slip if using paper method compatible with their plans. Sign a simple receipt stating registration, VIN, price, date, and names. Photograph both sides. If the buyer is exporting, additional HMRC and NOVA steps may apply — flag early.

Within 24 hours after sale

  • Cancel or transfer insurance with correct sale timestamp to avoid voiding cover
  • Retain sale evidence until DVLA shows keeper change
  • Check bank receipt matches agreed net figure including any disclosed fees
